Feature: Make-up Entrepreneur Huda Kattan

March 19, 2019

With over 29 million Instagram followers, Iraqi-American makeup artist and blogger Huda Kattan is the founder of her own cosmetics line, Huda Beauty. Huda Beauty is remarkable not only for its quality products (those duo-chrome eyeshadows!!), but for Kattan’s personal story that inspires her brand. Kattan started out working in finance, but after having her first child she decided to become a makeup artist. Now on her Youtube channel, Huda entertains 2.7 million subscribers with beauty videos – in both English and Arabic – and vlogs. Why Arabic, you may be thinking? Huda grew up in Oklahoma with her Iraqi immigrant parents, but later moved to Dubai with her husband. She stays true to her culture despite facing insecurity as a child.

In an interview with Forbes, Kattan said: “I always felt like a misfit. Even now, I still struggle with this a little bit. And I think that’s what probably motivates me so much. You internalize. Kids used to tell me I was weird all the time. When I got older, I wanted to embrace my name and I put it on everything. And I also wanted to embrace being weird.” Following her fame on Youtube and her blog Huda Beauty, Huda decided to create and sell her own line of high quality synthetic and real mink lashes in 2013.

After years of hard work, Huda Beauty is now sold on Huda’s website and Sephora retailers across the world. But Kattan won’t stop there; she explains that she wants to make Huda Beauty a business empire comparable to Estee Lauder (Forbes). One thing Huda Beauty does well is promote inclusivity. Huda launched the #FauxFilter foundation line in 2018 with 30 shades. This attention to detail is something lacking in the beauty industry, with only a few brands such as Fenty Beauty, Bobbi Brown, and Maybelline New York offering wide shade ranges. If you aren’t familiar with the Huda Beauty brand, the range of products can seem overwhelming. But truthfully, there’s so much more room for expansion. I created a list of some of my top picks – from eyeshadow palettes to face powders – to aid your next shopping trip.

  1. Huda Beauty Rose Gold Palette

Huda recently relaunched her Rose Gold eyeshadow palette two years after its initial release. I purchased this palette when it first came out and I am still in love with it! And from what I’ve heard, the quality has only gotten better since its transformation. Trust Fund and Rose Gold are two of the prettiest melted metal shadows you will ever see. If you don’t want to splurge on the 18 pan palette, Huda Beauty also offers a 9 pan palette called the Obsessions palette for only $27.

  1. Liquid Mattes

These liquid lipsticks are so longwearing and smudge-proof, while also being comfortable to wear. My favorite shade is Mamacita.

  1. Faux Mink Lashes

Huda’s brand got its start with the lashes, so it would be wrong to make a list without them! Huda Beauty has a variety of lashes, but these Faux Mink ones are the best because they are incredibly soft, universally flattering, and cruelty free.

In 2018, Huda Kattan earned her spot on Forbes List of America’s Richest Self-Made Women, marking her prominence as a female entrepreneur. She recently spoke at Harvard University and continues to inspire young women with her growing business and innovative products.
