Yesterday, Montrose’s Varsity Soccer team won the Independent Girls Conference against their perennial soccer rival, Brimmer & May in a hard-fought 2-1 contest. Montrose fans jammed the sidelines as Mavericks paired off against Gators. When the whole school charged to the sidelines after a brief Common Homeroom, the school let out a sustained supportive roar throughout the game. Rumor has it that a Brimmer player said, “Let’s shut this crowd up.” The Mavericks were grateful for the crowd support but admitted that the fans made it a little hard for the players to communicate. After the game, the fans charged onto the field, encircling the team in a moving symbol of unity.

The Montrose-Brimmer IGC rivalries have been building over the past three years. The Mavericks cinched the IGC title in 2015, Brimmer snatched the 2016 title, but Montrose has returned to the top with yesterday’s dramatic victory. Montrose Athletic Director Coach Ruggieri said: “Spirit and enthusiasm are the two words that come to mind when I think about yesterday’s soccer game. I am so proud of our soccer team for digging deep and truly working together to earn the IGC Championship title. Our students, faculty, and parents made the game unforgettable. The energy and spirit was unmatched. It made me feel so incredibly blessed to be part of this community.”

The intensity of this championship game was high. In the final minutes of the game, Brimmer and Montrose were tied, 1-1. A penalty on Montrose resulted in Captain Maggie Gilbert ‘18 booting an impressive kick from about 35-40 yard from the goal up to Maria “Lenny” Lennon ‘20 who booted it from the perfect angle into the left corner of the goal. With a 2-1 lead, Montrose did not give up the fight until the final whistle, and neither did Brimmer. “They played tough but we played with heart,” said Veronica Salvaggio ‘19.  Brimmer kept up a solid effort and intensity that required Montrose to remain focused until the final whistle.”Winning my first IGC championship with the best team ever game me the greatest feeling. We all worked so hard and I’m so proud and happy of our team!”, said Julia Convery ‘19. Both teams proved that it was a well-matched game and all players put in 100% the whole time.

“This is my last year playing for Montrose. Over the past four years playing soccer has been the highlight of my year. The girls are incredible to play with. I am extremely proud of how far this team has come. I am proud to be part of this amazing team,” said Captain Ciara Dunn ‘17.  Congratulations to the 2017 IGC Champions: the Montrose Varsity Soccer team! You have made Montrose proud.
