Basketball Undefeated and Racking up the Points

This year the Montrose varsity basketball team welcomes back its returning players and three new eighth graders, Faith Chen ‘22, Colleen Casey ‘22, and Kaleigh Robinson ‘22.  Over the first few practices, it became apparent that the team possessed great chemistry and was more than prepared to begin the season.  This chemistry was evident when the Montrosians won their first two games – starting the season undefeated.

The team prepares for three games this upcoming week.  They play at Gann on Monday, January 8th, at Concord Academy on Wednesday, January 10th, and at home on Friday, January 12th against Landmark.

Their first game was away against CSW; and, with most season-opening games, the team felt a little nervous.  Although they were losing at the half, the team rallied to win the game 38-28.  It was during this second half that the players and coaches noticed everything the girls had practiced come together.  It was obvious that the team was working well together and reading each other.

The second game was against their biggest rival, Gann Academy.  It proved to be an intense and nerve-racking game.  The girls started off strong and ended even stronger.  The 50-36 score was a huge accomplishment, especially earning such a high score so early in the season.  The game was intense, but the ongoing support from the fans kept the team motivated.

The team feels confident and proud of how they started the season strong.  They are excited to continue playing and see where their skills and hard work take them. Sophie Kocho ‘20 say, “I am so excited for the rest of our basketball season. During our practices, Coach Irwin and Coach Ruggieri encourage us to give it all we’ve got, and our hard work pays off in our games. This year we have an incredibly strong team, and our coaches are amazing. I am looking forward to seeing us improve throughout the season.”
