Testing Our Faith and Trusting in God

A double rainbow arches over a mountain.

Recently, I was reading the Bible to get some daily inspiration. I came across 2 Corinthians 13:5. It said: “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!”

This reminded me of a sermon that our parish priest gave. It has stayed with me ever since, and I think it will help whoever is reading this if they are ever going through a troubling time.

He said that whenever we are caught in a storm in life and are going through something, remember that God is letting it happen. If He didn’t, then we would have no way of proving our love and our trust in Him.

Consider sports as an example. I started cross country this year after two years of being passionate about running but never really taking it to a competitive level. As the year began, I was certain that I had what it took to take on a challenge like running.

Though there were many hills and rocks — as well as uneven roads — when it came to the first meet, I had to trust myself that I could do it, just like we have to trust in God that we will get through various barriers in our lives. I had to trust in God that everything would work out, and then put that into action to run the mile.

We don’t just use our legs while we run; we also develop a strong mentality. What does this have to do with what I’m talking about?

Well, the more we trust in our Creator and put that trust into action, the shorter the storm will be, since we know it is simply a test from which we will arise stronger and better than before.

We know that all we do, no matter how difficult or time-consuming, is for the purpose of becoming a better version of ourselves. I believe this verse perfectly exemplifies one way to look at this. It also presents a method to connect our temporary troubles with our faith because it is the foundation of our morals.

So the next time you’re going through something, remember that it’s just a chance to put your faith in God into action, to see how far you can push your boundaries with what you have and what you can take away from it.
