You may have been scrolling through the Looking Glass website in the past, reading some phenomenal articles and giving your compliments to the writer. Then, you reach the bottom of the article and see the title of “Food and Wellness Editor” or “News Editor” next to the writer’s name and wonder what the title means. This is what I pondered, too, so I decided to write an article about it! With the help of Elisabeth Smith ‘28, I answered my questions on the Looking Glass positions. Hopefully, I will answer your questions, too.
Contributing Writer
A Contributing Writer, thus the name, is any writer who contributes about one article per year. When you write for the very first time, your title is automatically a Contributing Writer, but you can eventually upgrade your title to a Staff Writer.
Staff Writer
A Staff Writer is anyone who writes at least one article per month and comes to the All-Staff meetings every-other Tuesday. After the second or third article that anyone writes for the Looking Glass, her title switches from Contributing Writer to Staff Writer.
Section Editor
Section Editors (e.g. Arts & Entertainment Editor, Sports Editor, Opinions Editor, etc.) are “in charge” of their section, which means that they edit and optionally comment on every article that comes in for their section, connect with their writers at meetings to check in and are there to support them if they need any help. Like Staff Writers, Section Editors must write at least one article per month, and they must also attend All-Staff meetings. Section Editors must also attend Editor meetings on the weeks in-between the All-Staff meetings, so, essentially, Section Editors are in Room 11 on Tuesdays every single week, unless told otherwise. The Looking Glass has several openings for section editors awaiting those who demonstrate interest and commitment. Current editorial positions open: News Editor, Copy Editor, Fashion Editor, Creative Writing Editor, Podcast Editor. Note that Mrs. Whitlock is always open to creating new editorial roles based on students’ interests as well.
Copy Editor
A Copy Editor is someone who edits articles, in addition to the Section Editor, in order to double-check that all of the grammar, spelling and formatting is correct. Copy Editors are divided up by posting day, so the Copy Editor for Monday, for example, would edit all of the articles for the sections that post on Monday.
Posting Editor
Posting Editors, as the name implies, are the ones who post the articles on the Looking Glass website, as well as looking them over and editing them for the final time. Just as Copy Editors are divided up by day, Posting Editors work the same way, posting all of the articles based on the day that they are assigned.
Co-Assistants and Editor-in-Chief
The Co-Assistants and Editor-in-Chief are the heads of the Looking Glass. They plan and run all of the meetings, both All-Staff and Editor ones, and connect with editors and writers to help brainstorm and write articles, along with any other concerns. The Co-Assistant and Editor-in-Chief work hard to make the Looking Glass experience better for everyone, both readers and writers! A Co-Editor title means that a role is shared between two people. For example, the Assistant Editor in Chief position is shared between Elisabeth Smith ‘28 and Sarah Lange ‘25, while the Editor in Chief position is singular because it is taken by one person, which is Amelia White ‘25.
