Averaging 13 runs scored per game and only two runs scored against, the 2024 Varsity Softball team concluded a championship-winning season with an undefeated in-league record. Although the season was a constant battle with weather – low temperatures, wind and rain – the softball team persisted, ultimately securing the Independent Girls’ Conference title.
Under the leadership of first-year coach Heather Thompson and assistant coach Ms. Archbold, the Varsity Softball team continued their winning record under previous head coach Janet Hogan. Although neither Coach Thompson nor Archbold have played softball, their insight and knowledge of the game led the team throughout the season. They continued Coach Hogan’s utilization of multiple practice spaces, including Miracle Field, the A&A, McCarthy Field and Sluggers Academy.
The 2024 Varsity Softball Team included three seniors: Leslie Baker, Abby Coyle and Kate Novack. Describing the seniors, Coach Archbold said that they made: “varying contributions to the team this year, all leading with their unique leadership styles. Combined, they had a unique ability to reach every member of the team and uplift them.”
Co-captain Leslie Baker was a reliable center-fielder, catching numerous difficult hits to the outfield and preventing many extra bases. Additionally, she was the designated “speaker-bearer,” using music to boost team morale. Batting in the number five slot, Leslie had multiple hits a game, and was always willing to carry extra equipment as well as drive teammates to away games. Her enthusiasm contributed to the team’s success as well as her selection as a member of the Independent Girls’ Conference All-League team.
A senior year transfer from Saint Joseph’s Prep, Abby Coyle was a standout pitcher. She delivered multiple strikeouts, only giving up minimal runs. When she wasn’t pitching, Abby was the starting third baseman, and her strong throw was key to many difficult infield plays. Offensively, Abby was the leadoff hitter, and the team could rely on her for a solid hit during every at-bat. When she wasn’t playing, Abby was always making her teammates smile, contributing to her selection as the team’s “Unsung Hero” and a member of the Independent Girls’ Conference All-League team.
A four-year member of Varsity Softball and 2024 co-captain, Kate Novack was a successful and versatile player, alternating between right or center field. She set the example for dedication and on-going improvement, as she worked on her swing throughout the season. Her commitment prompted the team to vote her “Most Improved Player.” Kate’s resolve greatly contributed to the team’s success, for she always took the initiative. Always enthusiastic, Kate led the team through warmups and cheers with a smile. Her spirit was infectious, and the team was driven by her zeal.
Inclement weather cut the season short, and the senior celebration was held in the cafeteria on May 16.
The Varsity Softball team won the Independent Girls’ Conference Championships for the third year in a row. The future is bright for the softball program at Montrose, as evidenced by the establishment of a separate JV program.
