Have you tried to convince your parents for a dog? Did it work? If not, why not try something smaller?
Guinea pigs are curious and intelligent animals who make great pets! They are small rodents closely related to hamsters, gerbils and rabbits. Their fur is soft and clean and they are a really nice pet. They are super gentle and friendly creatures. As they are also fun and easy to take care of, they make the perfect pet!
How many?
Guinea pigs are social creatures who need company. You can get two, three or maybe four. However, you will need a big enough cage for all of them. Guinea pigs need different measurements for the cage depending on how many you have but two guinea pigs need a minimum of 7.5 square feet.
Male or Female?
When getting a guinea pig it is highly suggested to buy two (preferably of the same gender). But how do you decide if you want male or female? Both make great pets! However, males tend to fight more often than females do which increases the chance of harming each other. So, females are usually a better way to go.
Food?
Guinea pigs, like many rodents, have teeth that never stop growing; because of this, they must always have some sort of toy or treat they can chew on to wear down their teeth. Guinea pigs also need to have a stable diet of hay and guinea pigs pellets. The hay helps wear down their teeth as well as being food while pellets provide all the vitamins and nutrients needed. You can also give them fruits and vegetables as treats such as: apples, carrots, blueberries, watermelon, lettuce, cucumbers, etc. However, before giving your pet a new vegetable, check with your veterinarian or look it up to see if it is a treat that is healthy for your guinea pig.

Sleep?
Guinea pigs only sleep four to six hours per day but not all at the same time. They take naps that are short, lasting no longer than 30 minutes, both during the day and night. Guinea pigs also sleep with their eyes open. As prey animals, they must be attentive at all times, especially when sleeping. Even if they feel safe in their cages they are still used to sleeping with their eyes open.
Tricks!
Another great thing about guinea pigs is that you can teach them tricks! A couple of tricks are stand up, having them come to you, stay, spin in a circle and more! While they are simple tricks they are fun to teach and cool to watch them do.
My Favorite Part?
My favorite part of owning guinea pigs is probably teaching them tricks and petting/holding them. They are super curious and fun!
Whether from a pet store or a shelter, guinea pigs are great pets to have! They are gentle, intelligent, and curious animals that are always cheerful and ready to play!
