As the new year begins, my goal is to develop as an individual, both physically and mentally, challenging myself in order to grow. However, most years, I give up on my growth mindset almost instantly; life’s overwhelming events capture and detain my mind. This year, I wanted to change. My new goal was to ensure I commit to my resolutions and continue to motivate myself to achieve them. My goals over the years have, in some cases, have been unreachable due to their unrealistic expectations. Luckily with these new goals, I feel as if they are achievable and easy to complete. I believe that these goals can help you too, and can improve our mental and physical wellbeing! Here are 4 easy steps to improving your wellbeing!
- Get Moving
Nature and regular physical activity is a key component in ensuring you remain healthy. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, “…30 minutes of walking every day can boost your mood and improve your health.” Especially after sitting for seven hours during school, moving is vital to ensure your body is able to refresh via breathing fresh air or experiencing nature.
- Socialize
Humans are wired to yearn for connection with others in order to avoid loneliness or isolation. Mattew Solan, the writer of Harvard Health Publishing, agrees: “Social interactions can stave off loneliness and protect against depression and cognitive decline. Strive to have some kind of social engagement every day: make a phone call, send an email, or chat with a neighbor.”
- Sleep!
I 100% agree with the University of New Hampshire on this recommendation! Sleep not only refuels your body and mind by harboring more energy; it also allows us to take a break from our busy lives and escape into our dreams. Furthermore, the University states: “A regular sleep cycle that leaves you feeling full rested and rejuvenated each day, ideally about eight days each night.” To ensure your body gets the sleep it requires, ensure that you are able to balance your work and social lives to accommodate the eight hour recommendation!
- Drink enough water
Unfortunately, I have trouble ensuring my body receives substantial amounts of water each day. My schedule causes me to forget to drink, which makes me feel worse as the day progresses. The University of Central Florida states: “Drinking enough water helps to prevent dehydration which can help you think clearly, benefit your mood and even support kidney health. Your body is mostly made of water so it makes sense that getting enough helps you function properly.”
From now on, I plan to incorporate these tips into my daily routine to ensure that my wellbeing remains balanced. Even if I adopt one of these habits I am convinced that I will be a better version of myself!
