One of my favorite treats happens to be the amazing milkshake. Every time my family and I order from fast food places, I would almost always ask for a milkshake. But that doesn’t mean I always got one :(. Over the years, I tasted many different types of milkshakes from different places, and I noticed that all the shakes I tried were different in some way or form. I decided to make a list of some of the milkshakes I’ve had and rank the place that makes them. I’ve included a few pictures of myself for proof of concept, and I tested all of them in my personal favorite flavor: chocolate.
- Shake Shack

Shake Shack falls the lowest on my list for a few reasons. Yes, I know the place is literally called SHAKE Shack, but the consistency of their shakes have never been to my liking. Every time I have had a shake there, my drink has many ice chips in it and doesn’t have the creaminess I crave. If I put the straw a little further into my mouth, I almost can’t taste or feel the ice chips, but I feel I shouldn’t have to drink my milkshake that way in the first place. I also find that their chocolate shake is just a little too bitter for me. I enjoy their black and white shake (vanilla with fudge swirled in) as the better “chocolate” option. Overall, Shake Shack offers so-so milkshakes – I like their burgers better.
- Chick-fil-a

My Chick-Fil-A shakes have been decent; I just have a few minor critiques on consistency. I have had many Chick-Fil-A shakes since it has become a routine for me to go to after my tennis clinics on Saturday afternoons. The flavor is unique in a good way, although I think their chocolate shakes taste a little too strongly of the signature vanilla ice cream flavor. The biggest problem I have is that my shake always goes from creamy to a strange, solidified ice cream consistency if I don’t drink it rapidly – and I like to take my time and savor my shakes. I usually have to stir the shake the whole time I have it to avoid this problem, but that tends to get annoying after a little while and my hand gets tired. If Chick-Fil-A could keep their milkshakes creamier, I wouldn’t have any problems with them.
- Burger King

Oh, this one was so hard! I love Burger King shakes, and the chocolate flavor and thick, creamy consistency is always spot on. When my family heads up to go skiing in Maine, we tend to take a pit stop at this awesome Burger King rest stop and I can get a milkshake for the rest of the ride. Sadly, I’m putting Burger King in third place due to service. Sometimes an employee will fill my shake to the brim or about three-quarters of the way there. This is probably because their one size has a slightly open top in case you want whipped cream. Also, one time my shake got spilled right in front of me by an employee! Of course, this was an accident and I got a replacement shake, but I wish the people who work at Burger King would be a little more consistent with my shakes. I guess this would be more of a people problem and not a milkshake problem, but Burger King gets third place on my list overall.
- Five Guys
I love a good Five Guys shake! The milkshakes there are always extra thick and super creamy (no ice chips)! I also love that Five Guys has options for mix-ins for your shake like candy or other syrups. While my chocolate shake has been more vanilla than chocolate in the past, as they swirl chocolate fudge with vanilla. However, when they get the chocolate flavor spot on, it’s probably the best milkshake I could ask for. The only reason Five Guys is second is because milkshake #1 is even better.
- McDonald’s
In my opinion, absolutely no shake can beat McDonald’s. Now I may be a little biased since I grew up with McDonald’s, but I have never been disappointed by their milkshakes. When I was little, my parents would always drive us there to grab lunch, shakes and a vanilla cone for my mom. Although I could only get the small size, nothing tasted sweeter than a chocolate McDonald’s shake on a Saturday. On top of my wonderful memories, McDonald’s always has a creamy, thick milkshake that tastes like drinking soft serve. I have tried other flavors as well, and know that the consistency applies to all their shakes. From their good service and consistently delicious shakes throughout the years, McDonald’s takes the win in the Milkshake showdown!
