For Service Day, the 6th grade went to Medfield Children’s Center. We played with, read to, and made crafts with kindergarteners down to toddlers. The kids had a great time, and we did too! One 6th grader described the kids as, “grinning from ear to ear!” But the 6th grade did more than just enjoy time with the kids. We also learned about two core Montrose values: service and solidarity.
So, how is playing with toddlers “service”? Well, we gave the leaders of the Medfield Children’s Center a break. The children there learned that “big kids” care about their lives. Also, the kids had a blast! They were so excited to have us there. When we arrived they were waving to us through the windows with enthusiasm on all their faces.
Solidarity was also a very important part of our day. Our GLMs split us into groups and then we were able to collaboratively work together and entertain the children. Hayden Condon ’30 commented that all the kids wanted to read different stories and she was feeling overwhelmed. She was very grateful when her friend noticed that she needed help and came over.
We participated in so many fun activities with the children, including Play-Doh, arts & crafts, dolls, trains, and more! It was great to enjoy this time with each other while doing a good deed.
The whole 6th grade absolutely loved spending time with this great group of kids! Who knew playing with toddlers could be so fun? The joy on their faces was so fulfilling to see, and it really warmed our hearts.
Overall, this trip to Medfield Children’s Center was an amazing experience where we got to practice two very important skills: service and solidarity. We all loved spending time with the kids and are hoping to go back soon!
