The Montrose Varsity Field Hockey team had its best season yet, powered by a combination of skill, determination, and an unbreakable sense of team spirit. With our best record yet, 7 wins, 2 ties, and 2 losses, we’ve made tremendous strides from previous years. Our success can be credited to our dedicated coaches, Coach Bettinelli, Coach Osborne, and Coach Caranti, who guided us through every challenge. Despite facing setbacks, like the injury of our starting goalie, Bea White ‘27, we remained focused and bounced back stronger, united by our sisterhood. We couldn’t have done it without each and every player on our team.
One of our games that stood out in particular was our home game against Concord Academy. They were one of our biggest competitors this season. Last year, we faced a tough challenge at Concord Academy, falling short in hard-fought matches. Despite the previous loss, the experience only fueled our determination to come back stronger this year. Fast forward to this season, in a highly anticipated game, our team finally broke through. With a key goal in the final minutes, we beat Concord Academy with a 2 – 1 win, using our precision, teamwork, and grit. The win not only marked a major milestone for the team but also proved that through hard work and perseverance, we can do anything as a team.
Another game that stood out was the contest against Dana Hall. Earlier this season, we played at their fields, tying 4 – 4. Having the home-field advantage on Miracle Field, we were able to put together a stronger performance. Adele Lyons ‘27 stepped up for Bea by filling in as goalie. Every moment in this game was bittersweet because it was the last game the Montrose Varsity Field Hockey team would perform on a non-renovated Miracle Field. Starting the game off strong, we scored early. As the game continued, we scored yet again, still with no goals against us. The last goal we scored was by Chloe Munroe ‘26; she sprinted down the field, maneuvered straight past the goalie, and shot on an open net, bringing us to a 3-0 win. Watching this game, we saw how much we had grown since our first game of the season and how far we had come as a team.
Off the field, the sisterhood within the team was just as important as our performance on it. Our lone senior Josie Marcucci ‘25 stated: “ I love how close the team has gotten this year. Not only have we done really well on the field, but we also have shared so many moments off the field, like the team dinner and team sleepover. We have become more like a family than a team and I’m so sad to leave them!” Not only were we driven by our fuel and determination, but we were driven by each other, and all the support and encouragement we had for each other as teammates.
The 2024 season was a pivotal time for the field hockey team. Not only did we achieve our best record yet, but we won against schools that they had never beaten in the past. The girls on the team portrayed their best athletic performances while showing their best sportsmanship. As on any other team, there were difficult games and practices, but the girls pushed through with smiles and never let negativity limit their possibilities. The sisterhood on the team was clear through all the support and positivity on the field. Captains Josie Marcucci ‘25 and Nikki Schuster ‘26 always offered kind critiques and embodied servant leadership, no matter the situation. We couldn’t have asked for a better team. We are so excited to see the field hockey team’s 2025 season and watch both the team and each girl grow.
