From watching her on Miracle Field in both Varsity Lacrosse and Soccer matches, to taking care of the Montrose chapel, to helping prospective students through the Red Key club, and leading Looking Glass meetings in room 11, Cate Lynch is a senior who it is hard not to be friends with, and impossible to not admire. She is constantly supporting others, whether it is being a leader on the field, giving advice on a newspaper article idea during meetings, or just saying ‘hi’ in the hallways. Her articles about professional soccer have taught me personally as well as the whole Montrose community so much about the sport, and all of its driving forces off of the field, as well as ones about Montrose’s own sports teams. There are countless ways that Cate has selflessly given to the Montrose community during her time here, only a few of which I am able to highlight here.
At Montrose, Cate is a three-season athlete, playing on the Varsity Soccer team as a captain and Lacrosse team, as well as running on the Indoor Track team during the winters. “She gave her full effort every single time she stepped on the field for lacrosse and soccer,” said Rachel Dunn ’25, one of Cate’s teammates on both Varsity Soccer and Lacrosse. “She was always there for her teammates and classmates if they needed anything.” After watching her play in games from both soccer and lacrosse, as well as running with her on the Indoor Track team, I have seen how diligent of an athlete she is, while still supporting those around her. Even when she was in a boot this winter, Cate continued to come to track practices to participate in whatever workouts that she could, showing how committed she was to her teams, and how hard she worked through any challenges.
As Josie Marcucci ’25 remarks in her article about the seniors members of the Montrose Chapel Crew, Cate “was always very on top of her schedule, rarely missing when she was scheduled… She was a quiet leader who I know many people looked up to for guidance in this club.” I have seen how hard Cate works before, during, and after daily mass to assure that everything runs smoothly and to keep the chapel beautiful, and I know that all of Josie’s comments describe her perfectly.
Cate has served as the Sports Editor for the Looking Glass, and during the past year has been our Assistant Editor-in-Chief. According to Mrs. Whitlock, the newspaper’s faculty advisor: “Cate unleashed our most successful sports coverage as [two-year] sports editor and then assumed the #3 exec editor role, consistently working to edit and post magic behind the scenes. We’ll miss her stylistic writing and surgical editor’s eye. Most of all, we’ll miss her all-in team approach to getting things done!”
After joining the Looking Glass during her freshman year here at Montrose since some of her friends were part of the club, and viewing it as fun and social, Cate wrote her first article on winter sports at Montrose. Now, one of Cate’s personal favorite articles that she has written was one about the US Women’s Soccer Team pay gap from 2022. After asking her about what her favorite part(s) about the Looking Glass are, she replied that they were being able to lead the weekly All-Staff and Editors’ meetings, as well as getting to talk to girls from other grades at Montrose. She credits the newspaper for helping her to meet many people that she may not have gotten to know otherwise.
This past spring, as the Looking Glass editors from the previous year mentor the rising editors as they begin their new positions, I was fortunate enough to watch Cate as she showed me how to edit and post articles, as well as helping me to understand the roles that I would have to fill for the next year as I inherited her position. Through this, I was able to see first hand how much time and effort Cate puts into the Looking Glass every week, from posting, to planning and running meetings, and all of the details that need to be taken care of for the newspaper to run smoothly. Cate answered every question I asked about the position with patience and a smile, and was always on top of everything that needed to be done. Looking back on the last few months, I have been so lucky to have had Cate as a role model; I have learned so much from her, and I am so grateful for this opportunity to learn from her example of hard work and dedication this year.
As Mrs. Elrod commented during graduation this past Friday, Cate will be sure to “conquer any summit” at Boston College this fall. Montrose has been so lucky to have her during her time here, and we can’t wait to read all of your newspaper articles and hear about everything you will accomplish there! We will miss you so much next year, and send a heartfelt ‘thank you’ for all that you have given us. Cate, thank you.
