The saint of the month is, drum roll please, St. Mother Cabrini! Her feast day is on November 13th, and she is known for being an Italian missionary in America. Her story can inspire us as students to be patient and to never stop trusting in God. I am thrilled to share it with you today.
Mother Cabrini was born on July 15, 1850 in Italy. Since childhood, she had always dreamed of becoming a missionary, especially to China. A missionary is someone who travels to areas of the world in need, and they help people find God. Mother Cabrini understood that people in all different places needed help, and she was willing to help any of them no matter how long it took to make it happen. In 1880, after being denied joining another convent, she started the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
She shared her dreams of becoming a missionary but the Sisters tried to hold her back because they were worried about themselves since they were poor. Mother Cabrini just trusted in God to provide for them and He did. She had lots of patience and faith, trusting that everything would work out. Finally after 30 years of praying to and trusting in God, her prayers were answered and she went to New York to help Italian immigrants.
She helped orphans and people on the streets and brought God’s love to everyone that she met. Even though her dream to travel to China was not granted to her, she was patient and followed the Lord’s path. She soon traveled throughout the USA and helped many people, especially orphans. She started schools and provided places for the orphans to stay.
After a life complete with service and great accomplishments, Mother Cabrini died on December 22, 1917. She was made a saint in 1946 and she is the patron saint of Italian immigrants and quite surprisingly, parking lots. Caroline, an 8th grader, has a small chant for this remarkable saint. It goes like this, “Mother Cabrini, Mother Cabrini, Please find a spot for my little machinee. (Machine changes to rhyme with Cabrini 🙂 )”
Mother Cabrini is a truly wonderful role model to look up to. She helps us to be patient and to trust in God’s plan for us, even when it is not what we expect. She also teaches us to help everyone and love all. I hope that you were as inspired as I was about this saint and that you will reflect on her actions and how you can incorporate them into your daily life.
