Despite coping with the typical New England weather of snow and ice throughout the winter, Montrose’s Indoor Track team concluded another record-breaking season.
The team maximized their three-day-a-week practice schedule and exercised outside when possible. Sprinters utilized the school parking lot for 200-meter intervals, whereas distance runners traversed Medfield’s neighborhoods for two-mile tempo runs. If brutal winter weather limited the team’s usual outside workouts, the team opted for indoor full-body strength training.
The season spanned five meets held at Wheaton College, Phillips Andover Academy, and Phillips Exeter Academy. Despite limited opportunities for improvement in competitions, athletes broke numerous school records, including in the 55-meter hurdles, 1,000-meter, and the one mile.
Sprinter Elizabeth Barrette ‘29 noted: “This track season, the team not only grew in size, but also in talent. So many people tried new things, and most everyone broke their former [personal records]! It was yet another successful Montrose track season!”
Previous assistant coach Rebecca Sullivan ‘09 stepped into the lead coaching role this year during head coach Jill Kerr’s absence. Senior captains Rosie Beard, Eva Derendorf, and Grace Sanyu worked closely with Coach Sullivan to maintain Coach Kerr’s high standards. The team maintained an immense camaraderie throughout the season.
Distance runner Carolina Florez ‘26 commented: “Even though some people may think track is a more individual sport, the team spirit was really present this season!”
