Contrary to what the name implies, the indoor track team spends most of the season practicing outside. While the distance runners are jogging through Medfield’s neighborhoods, the sprinters may be completing flying-60’s on Miracle Field. The team comes together for hill intervals.
Captain Rosie Beard ‘25 commended team members for their hard work: “It was so fun to watch people work hard in practice and then watch their work pay off in races.” Despite icy conditions and low temperatures, the team perseveres through each practice.
During the season, Head Coach Jill Kerr, a record-breaking track and cross country runner at Wake Forest University, traveled to her alma mater to be inducted into the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame. The Mavericks sent her off with a congratulatory card and bouquet. Coach Kerr wished the team success at the two meets they would compete in during her absence.
During Coach Kerr’s absence, Coach Fullencamp and Coach Sullivan joined the coaching staff to work with athletes. Coach Fullencamp mentored new field athletes, whereas Coach Sullivan accompanied the team on distance runs.
For two meets this season, the team traveled almost 80 miles North to Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire. Genevieve Nohrden ‘27 explained the competition is worth the long bus rides. “My favorite part was the meets,” she said. “I liked being able to do a bunch of different events, and it was also fun to watch everyone else compete in their events.”
The 39 athletes on the team set new school records, including in the 4 x 400 meter relay and the 55-meter hurdles. Runners also expanded their comfort zone and tried new track and field events, such as shot put and hurdles.
Compared with other Montrose sports that practice four days a week, the track team maximized its three-day-a-week practice schedule with some runners crushing personal records.
“Track has been so fun this year because the team’s bond is growing closer and we are getting stronger and stronger every day,” said Ava Menasha ‘26.
