For the first time ever, women’s lacrosse has hit the national stage! Here are some things about this new league to bring you up to speed.
In Nov. 2024, a national women’s lacrosse league was established. The league consists of four teams: The Boston Guard, New York Charging, Maryland Charm and California Palms. These teams are composed of some of the best women’s lacrosse players in the world including: Charlotte North (Boston Guard), Izzy Scane (New York Charging), Alex Aust Holman (Maryland Charms) and Ally Mastroianni (California Palms). All of these girls are captains of their respective teams.
Sponsored by Maybelline New York, the league had its first-ever championship game on February 17, 2025. If you watched, you may have noticed this championship game’s format was different from a usual women’s lacrosse game. Instead of playing 12 vs 12, the teams played a “Sixes” format, meaning only six players were on the field at a time. This format will be used in the upcoming Olympic Games. The smaller number of players on the field makes for a fast-paced game with on-the-fly subbing. The five field players must play both sides of the ball, contributing on both offense and defense. To add to the intensity, the center draw is only taken at the start of each quarter, rather than after each goal, resulting in constant motion. Boston beat New York with a 22-17 victory. This championship game paved the way for the debut of the first-ever women’s lacrosse team in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
