This past August, an incredible group of athletes worked for their spot on the Varsity field hockey team. On the last day of the four day-long tryouts, the 2025 Montrose field hockey team was announced: Kendra Baker ‘26, Gabriella Dansereau ‘26, Gabbie Fetter ‘26, Chloe Munroe ‘26, Nichole Schuster ‘26, Gigi Adovasio ‘27, Juliana Flores ‘27, Adele Lyons ‘27, Maddie O’Brien ‘27, Elena Schuster ‘27, Elizabeth Barrette ‘29, Marae McCarthy ‘29, Jackie Sparks ‘29 and Elisabeth Smith ‘28. The team was also fortunate enough to have two swing players who played for both varsity and JV: Susie Kemp ‘28, and Luli Martinez ‘29. Together, the team had an incredible season.
The season started off strong by conquering almost all of our opponents on our home field, beating Concord Academy, Mount Saint Charles and Dana Hall. Though, this was just the beginning of going against these teams. We beat almost every team we played on home field in the beginning of the season. Then, we went on to play those teams again but on their home fields (sometimes even turf!) One of the biggest games and challenges this season was facing Dana Hall for the second time on their home turf. We had beaten them by one point at McCarthy Park, but this game had a different energy and a much different surface. An incredible, physical and tiring game was played, but, when the buzzer went off, the score was 1-1. This meant overtime. Each team had to pick seven players to play for 10 minutes or until the goal was scored. Back and forth, back and forth, the two teams were so evenly matched. Not long into overtime, a Montrose player got a yellow card, meaning that we had to play a player down for almost the rest of overtime. Just like that, they scored, 1-2. Despite the loss, Montrose put up an amazing fight and it was an amazing game.
Despite not being a turf team, Montrose rose to every occasion and brought their best to every game. The final game of the season was senior night! Unfortunately, it had to be rescheduled due to weather. When the makeup day came, it was yet another gloomy, wet day. Despite the conditions, they were very playable and the team was willing to play for the seniors. Unfortunately, the other team was not as willing to play. Wheeler School drove from Rhode Island to McCarthy Park and decided they didn’t want to play. It was a battle trying to convince the coach that the field was in safe enough conditions to play (it was). In the end, the seniors did not get their senior game. This was a great disappointment, but the team made the best of it. Despite not having a game, the team still celebrated the five amazing seniors! Back in the M&M, there was pizza, cupcakes, drinks and farewell speeches waiting for them. It is safe to say that the team will greatly miss the seniors, but are excited to see what their future holds.
Now, this would not be a proper season overview if there was no mention of the very important people who made this incredible season possible. Thank you to our three amazing captains: Kendra, Chloe and Nikki. These captains led practices over the summer, and were always taking the lead during in-season practices. Thank you also to our three amazing coaches: Coach Bettinelli, Coach Caranti, and Coach Osborne. They worked so hard this season and led the team to great success. Lastly, to our amazing goalie, Adele; she stepped up to this important role this season and we could not be more impressed and grateful for her. Finally, some members of the team have some of their thoughts of the season:
Jackie Sparks ‘29 said: “The 2025 field hockey season has been amazing! Though we had many challenges, we persevered and grew as a team. I really think the chemistry we have is a big factor of our success because you can see it on and off the field. I am so sad to see the season end, but it has been a season filled with unforgettable memories, laughter and growth. From early morning practices to tough games, every moment brought us closer together and truly made us a family.”
Jackie’s words capture the team chemistry. Coach Bettinelli made it a point to make sure everyone on the team were friends and the team as a whole was a working unit. This goal was definitely achieved, and it is evident that teams with good chemistry play better together!
Nikki Schuster ‘25 and also one of our captains captures the heart and hustle the team gave to this season: “This season the Varsity field hockey team has shown a lot of grit, determination, and a positive attitude. Having a few obstacles in our season has made us work harder and grow closer as a team. We have worked hard, had a great season and made many new memories together!”
Just like that, the 2025 Field Hockey season comes to an end. It was such a joy playing with everyone, and it is safe to say the future for Montrose field hockey is bright!
