One cold and stormy morning, in a dark mysterious hallway, lingered one sole student. The eyes of the world are not yet open at 7:00 AM, but Montrose School is. Luna Deane, class of 2050, stood alone across from locker G54.
Then, something mysterious happened. The lock began twisting on its own. 4…33…
Luna gasped, and glanced uncertainly down the hallway. She was all alone. Even though she knew she was in fact, truly alone, she still felt the presence of another.
A small sound jarred her greatly. A red Skittle, one she was sure had not been there before, rattled on the cold tile. Since the great Red 40 ban a few years ago, red Skittles were extinct and replaced with naturally flavored pink Skittles. So how was one here? Luna was tempted to eat the solitary Skittle; after all, the ten second rule was scientifically proven to be reliable, right?
Luna shook with fear. A twisting lock, a banned candy appearing out of thin air? What was happening? Suddenly, the single light that was left on so early in the mornings flickered with its ominous glow fading in and out, until the light died altogether, leaving Luna alone in the dark.
A familiar voice belonging to Luna’s friend Calypso Grimm called out in fear, “Luna? Luna, what’s going on?”
“Callie!” Luna practically shrieked. “There are ghosts.”
“Luna!” Callie started with urgency. “There is no such thing as ghosts!”
“Come here, and maybe this twisting lock will change your mind.”
Callie removed her iPhone 37 from the pocket of her non-Montrose sweatshirt, and turned on flashlight mode, revealing a ghostly path of light for her to travel in while keeping an eye out for the notorious Mrs. Baker.
“I—I see it!” Callie screeched, staring at the spinning lock.
“I told you,” Luna said smugly.
CRUNCH. Callie’s black Vans crushed something small. The red powder lay on the floor while Callie looked down at it with confusion.
“Luna? What is that?” she asked. “I know it’s October, we are two days in, and I know it’s spooky season but this seems…”
“Extreme? Horrifying? Absolutely a nightmare?”
“Is that a Skittle? A real life, Red 40 Skittle?” Callie gasped, realization flooding her features.
“I almost forgot those existed. Weren’t they banned? I feel like Skittles are familiar somehow, but I can’t remember. Can you?”
“You’re right. It does sound familiar. But how could an outlawed candy have anything to do with calling girls to greatness?” Luna asked.
The locker began to rattle and shake even more violently, until the locker door could handle the pressure no longer!
With a loud BANG locker G54 swung open, revealing a kind figure dressed in white robes.
Callie and Luna screamed, then stopped. Something about this man looked familiar from the earlier Founders’ Day Kahoot.
“Father Dick?” Luna whispered.
“Hello, children! Don’t be frightened. I just wanted to tell you Happy Founders’ Day!” he told them.
“I also come with advice: never forget to pray to your guardian angel, remember that God is in charge, and always love the others, the others, the others.”
“We will, Father!” the girls chorused, realizing there was no reason to be scared.
