During the first couple weeks of November, the students of National Honor Society ask each class to donate basic living necessities or money for “Operation Christmas Child.” This tradition has been happening for many years at Montrose, where people bring in their items for the duration of time decided by NHS, and then, at a Common Homeroom later in the month, girls get in their Big/Little sister pairs in order to create Christmas boxes for children of impoverished countries. NHS wraps up the boxes and prepares them to be sent to the little boys and girls who without our help would not receive a Christmas gift. “Operation Christmas Child not only helps out these young boys and girls,” says Emma Schiller, an NHS member and Christmas enthusiast, “but it is a good way for the entire school to come together and work towards a common goal.” She also adds that even though we don’t know the children personally, these small acts of kindness adds to the seasonal joy, knowing that we are making their Christmases special.
