Thanks to StudGov’s first day presentation — complete with cool sunglasses for everyone — the theme for this year at Montrose is perspective. Choosing an annual theme has been a longstanding tradition at Montrose. The four Student Government executives put a lot of effort into coming up with the perfect theme, and then keeping it a secret until the first day of school. To get some perspective on our current theme, we went to our president, Elle Schirripa.
Perspective means taking a particular attitude about something which includes a broader perspective. Schirippa explained how StudGov chose this year’s theme:“At the beginning of the summer, we brainstormed for a while trying to find the best possible theme for the year, and we arrived at perspective. We decided on this theme because we can all be reminded to not become caught up in the trivial aspects of our lives.”
She added, “When school becomes stressful or sports demanding, it’s easy to ‘bunker down’ and just focus on that, when, in reality, there is so much more. Having perspective implies that we do these little things– academics, sports, drama, extracurriculars– well while recognizing that they do not define our purpose; they are small steps in helping us realize our greater purpose. We hope that as a school community, we can focus more on the others and accept daily obstacles without becoming blinded by them. It’s all about the way you look at it. How do we see daily challenges?“
To help us remember this year’s theme, re-imagine the StudGov executives, Elle Schrippa, Olivia Aha, Megan St. Martin and Maggie James, decked out in pink and dancing to their version of the Bruno Mar’s song “Treasure,” with StudGov recreated as the “Perspective Song.” Sing along with the lyrics below.
Give me your, give me your, give me your attention, Montrose
I gotta tell you a little something about this theme
Everything is not what it seems
We wouldn’t say that if it weren’t true
I know it’s hard but you gotta try (gotta try)
Oh girl you gotta realize there’s another side (another side)
Perspective- That’s our theme this year
You just can’t look near
You gotta see the big picture too
And look from other points of view
WHoaoaosoaoa
It’s how we view it, it’s how we view it
It’s how we view it, yeah, how we, we, we view it
It’s how we view it, it’s how we view it
It’s how we view it, yeah, view, view, view it
Perspective- That’s our theme this year
You just can’t look near
You gotta see the big picture too
And look from other points of view
Whoahoaoaoao
