Varsity Volleyball and Soccer Dominate 1st Round of Post-Season IGL Competitions

The Montrose Mavericks shut-out opponents yesterday and advanced in the Independent Girls League (IGL) post-season competitions. Varsity Volleyball defeated Landmark School in three straight sets while Varsity Soccer defeated Cambridge School of Weston 5-0. Montrose fans rocked the sidelines while the Maverick mascot traveled between games to add a few organized cheers to the fandom.

The Volleyball victory tastes especially sweet, given that the team is in its second season, and last year was a foundational year that offered less on the win side but much on the skill and team building side. The Mavs dominated in the serving department, with Co-Captains Aine Ford ‘18, Isabella Heron ‘19, Courtney Aicardi ‘20, Julia Lewis ‘18, and Julia McKenzie ‘19 serving countless unanswered balls. Caroline Churney ‘19 set and endless series of plays; her role as libero led her to have first contact with most of the opponent’s serves. The well-coached Montrose team, thanks to Mrs. Joseph, offered diverse lineup patterns. The team(wo)manship was visible in a series of choreographed hand/cheer gestures that kept the team smiling and positive as they confronted each challenge. The Mavs blew out Landmark in the first two sets (25-7 and 25-9), and they pushed through to victory throughout the close-fought third set (29-27).

Aine said: “Being able to lead this team has been a privilege and a blessing. I’m thankful that everyday, I can go play a sport I love with a team I love. We have come so far in only a few short months, and I’m so sad to see the season end, but happy to see this incredible growth.” The team plans on offering instruction during the winter to make it easy for interested girls to try their hand at volleyball, so stay tuned.

The Mighty Mavs Varsity Soccer team clinched a semi-final IGS round win by shutting out Cambridge School of Weston yesterday on Miracle Field. The Mavericks remain undefeated in league play, and they beat Dana Hall for the first time earlier in the season. The team has starting players that range from 8th-12th grade, which leaves a hopeful future for the team. The team moves onto the IGS finals within the next week, so stayed tune to bring your Montrose pride to the sidelines to support the team.

Yesterday’s game was also designated as the senior game, honoring Co-Captains Ciara Dunn and Maggie Gilbert, Kelsey Lopez, Isabelle Buckley, Emma Portinova, and Therese Schickel.  Teammate Maria Lennon ‘20 said: “The entire team loves them and will miss them very much next year.”  Each senior received the traditional red rose. Isabel Buckley added: “I think the team has really come together this year, creating a great team chemistry. Everyone works hard and looks out for one another.”

All of Montrose’s fall teams have had exciting and successful seasons. Athletic Director Julie Ruggieri said: “It is a really exciting time to be a part of Montrose athletics! The culture our teams create is positive, optimistic, and fun. Volleyball and soccer are advancing in the IGC tournament, Field Hockey had a fantastic senior game on Friday, and Cross-Country is preparing to compete in the NEPSTA Championships in Maine next weekend. I am so proud of the hard work and dedication our athletes and coaches have put forth this fall season, striving for greatness on and off the field. I look forward to watching our students and faculty continue to cheer from the sidelines!”
