With the soccer season coming to a close, there is much to say about the Junior Varsity Soccer team. The team consists of 21 extraordinary girls, grades sixth through ninth. The team’s two fantastic coaches are Coach Langhurst and Coach Ortiz, Mrs. Knox’s sister.
The JV team has played many games, resulting in one win, one tie, and multiple losses. Three games had sadly been cancelled due to rain and scheduling conflicts with the players. The first game was a home game against Mount Saint Charles, ending in a 2-2 tie. The next game, the JV team travelled to Rhode Island to face them again but at their school. Unfortunately, Montrose lost this match with a final score of 7-1, but it is worth mentioning that they were playing girls on the Varsity team of Mount Saint Charles. The team’s next game was against Lexington Christian Academy. It resulted in a loss, with the score being 4-3, but the worst loss of the game was that of the teammate, Charlotte Keefe ‘29. After her fall in the first half, Charlotte broke her wrist and came back to school the following day in a cast. Additionally, teammate Giulia Benson ‘30 was forced to sit out for the rest of the season after her knee injury.
With the loss of Charlotte and Giulia, the team looked upon the remaining games of the season as a chance to not only win but also for them both who were major factors to the team’s success. Unfortunately, the next game against The Newton Country Day School resulted in a 1-0 loss. Despite the loss the team’s skills and hard work continued to show throughout the entirety of the game earning the players many compliments at the end. Francesca Wilkey ‘29, the team’s primary goalie, was highlighted due to her many impressive saves. The next week the team had a game against the Beaver Country Day School. The game quickly escalated into a competition of skill, speed, and physical play. Throughout the game, the JV team led in the score; it ended 4-3! Unfortunately, after the highly intense game against Beaver, the team played a home game against Saint Catherine of Siena and lost.
With one last game of the season against Lexington Christian Academy, the Junior Varsity team will soon disband. However, their bonds as teammates will continue as this season has been filled with hard work, support for each other, and lasting memories. We have not won every game but in spite of that, the JV girls have made this soccer season truly spectacular.
