The Varsity Field Hockey Team has moved from obscurity as a two-year club team to a competitive team over the three years. A year ago, Montrose Field Hockey joined NEPSAC, and in early September the team participated in it’s first tournament at St. George’s School in Newport, Rhode Island. Montrose Athletic Director, Jodi Blackburn explained: “During the summer, St George’s School sent us an invitation to participate in an early season play-day. I asked if Montrose, a first year member of NEPSAC Field hockey could join, and St George’s was so pleased to include Montrose.” Montrose made sure the Mavericks were noticed.
For the full-day tournament, the team took the hour and a half ride to Newport, prepped and ready to play. Field confusion caused a minor delay when the team arrived. After running around the pool area for a solid 15 minutes looking for a bathroom, the team assembled all the gear and hiked a mile to the correct playing field.
Montrose played three very hard fought games. The first match, versus North, was a very skilled and competitive game ending in a tie, zero to zero. The second game followed immediately against East Greenwich. Both teams gave the game their all with East Greenwich pulling out a win 3-0 in the second half. The final match was a nail biter, with Montrose losing to St. Georges by only two points in the last 15 minutes.
“I was so proud of the the players and their willingness to play” said Coach Blackburn. She added, “The tournament was an optional game, and I think the entire team plus some JV players participated.” Juniors Ally O’Connell and Meagan Albertson said: “It was really a full team effort. We each played well and played to each others strengths. Our motto for this year is fight to the finish; and the entire team really proved itself worthy opponents for future challengers.”
In regular season play, the Mavericks Varsity Field Hockey Team remain undefeated in the season thus far, including a 9-0 shutout against Cambridge School of Weston. Some challenges await the team in upcoming games.
The one thing the field hockey team could use more of is support. So far, the school fanbase consists of parents and relatives, coming to see their daughters play one of the most exciting sports in the world. The team would love if more students and teachers came to watch the game. More fans on the sideline would give the girls the extra boost of energy they need to play their hardest until the very end; really fighting to the finish. The home games are played at McCarthy Field at 46 Hospital Rd, Medfield MA. To get there from Monterose follow North Street towards Green Street (away from 109). At fork take slight left onto Harding Street. At next fork take a slight left onto Hospital Road. The fields will be on the left.
