We ran onto the field, the woodchips bouncing beneath our feet. It was an unreal feeling to say “We have a game on the turf today.” On Wednesday, April 29th, Varsity Lacrosse was the first Montrose sports team to play on the new Miracle Field. It was an honor and a responsibility, and we are so grateful to have had this incredible opportunity.
We started the game with warmups. Playing on the new, slippery turf was a challenge for our team, who had gotten used to long grass and mud. Lots of mud. However, we pushed through various playing surfaces with much perseverance, so we were ready for the challenge. Our coach, Coach Langhurst, has often said that this will truly be a “season to remember,” and, partially due to our constant lack of practice space, it was! But, this season was also memorable because of our resilience in the face of adversity.
It was surreal to know we were making Montrose history that will be remembered by Montrose athletes and students alike. Every ball thrown and caught felt like a victory, because it was our own field, our home turf.
Father John stopped by as well, joyfully blessing every inch of the field with Holy Water. We took a lovely team picture and were also blessed as the first team on Miracle Field.
The game began, and, adrenaline driving us, we gained an early lead. We won this first game by a good margin, but what the score did not show was the incredible camaraderie and joy built throughout this unusual season. Every goal, every successful pass, every interception was a cause for celebration. Even our mistakes—our dropped balls, fouls, and missed shots—were made inconsequential by the triumphs. We were so happy to have experienced this, and are so excited for many more games on Montrose’s own, beautiful turf. This truly was a season to remember.
