As you stepped out of your car last Sunday morning, you heard the chatter of happy people as they lined up to race, and the delicious smell of pancakes drifted through the air. The presence of the people has a sad but hopeful feel as you hurry over to greet your friends.
The Maverick 5k is held in honor of one of Montrose’s beloved students, Elizabeth Schickel. Elizabeth was a huge part of the Montrose community and is greatly missed. A Montrose student shared: “My mom taught and coached Elizabeth Schickel and our family is friends with the Schickel family so we have strong connections to the Schickel foundation! This event is also really fun so I enjoy doing it with some of my friends!” This popular Montrose event consists of a pancake breakfast, a bouncy house, face painting, a one mile kids run and, of course, the 5k itself! Overall, this experience is not one to miss!
The race raises money for cancer research and other charities. Running the races is a great way to help raise money, and anyone can participate! If the 5k is too much for you to run, feel free to walk it and even to bring along a stroller. The event is family-friendly and is a great way to spend your day. Lots of people come to support and join the runners. Montrose girls love this experience too! One student said: “The Maverick 5k is an amazing experience. Along with the fun of the race and the Pancake Breakfast, it is an amazing chance to connect with both friends and family, and Elizabeth’s memory.”
Right before the race kicked off this year, one of Elizabeth’s friends said a small speech that sent one strong and clear message: when you do something that requires physical exertion, you don’t have to do it, you get to do it. She encouraged the runners and listeners to be grateful for what you are able to do and to do these things with joy. When the race started, each runner had one thing in mind. “I get to run today. I get to do the thing that Elizabeth loved most and do it all for her.” With that inspiration, some of the 5k runners crossed the finish line in under 20 minutes! In all this race has a lot of meaning and fun intertwined into it and is an experience for the entire family. I don’t know about you, but I cannot wait to run again next year!
