The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) is on the rise, especially with the new addition of the Boston Legacy Football Club. Founded in September 2023, the club is a new and improved version of the Boston Breakers, an NWSL team that was founded in 2009 and folded in 2017. Despite the brief excitement around the Breakers, Boston Legacy is here to stay. After initially being launched as BOS Nation, the group rebranded to Boston Legacy in March of 2025, thinking this to be a better fit. A group of four female Boston natives, Jennifer Epstein, Stephanie Connaughton, Ami Kuan Danoff, and Anna Palmer, initially had the idea for the team in 2023 because they wanted to bring women’s soccer back to Boston.
Team History and Story Behind Boston Legacy
After launching the idea for the team in September of 2023, the four founders of the club as well as Domenec Guash, general manager of Boston Legacy, and Filipa Patao, the head coach, began scouting players to create a strong roster. Investors and other people who were interested in the club also joined this group and got involved in figuring out the logistics of the team. This included the team’s sponsors, home pitch, staff and player payment, and much more. Sponsors such as TJ Maxx, Voya Financial, and Hyundai Motor America were all very eager to partner with Boston Legacy and advertise their companies on the team’s snazzy black and emerald green uniforms. The club also decided to claim Gillette Stadium as their temporary field for home games, but they are hoping to ultimately claim White Stadium as their home base when the facility finishes undergoing renovations in 2027. The ownership group of the club also decided on the team’s financial income, which resulted in players having salary contracts that offer them up to 3.5 million dollars. In March of 2025, Boston Legacy established a strong social media presence on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Tiktok in order to draw attention to the club and captivate athletes all over New England.
Inaugural Season for Boston Legacy
After twenty-three talented female athletes, ranging from nine different countries and eight American states, were selected for the team and final adjustments were made to the club, the players amazed fans during their first in-season game on Saturday, March 14th, 2026 at Gillette Stadium. Over 30,000 passionate fans watched the match, setting a record for home-opener fan attendance in the NWSL! Despite the 1-0 loss to Gotham FC, the team clearly has strong chemistry, skill, and spirit. So far, they have an 0-4 record, but each game has been extremely close, and the team has been learning and adjusting. They have had a positive experience overall. They are very excited for the remainder of the season, which stretches until early November.
Boston Legacy is an excellent addition to the New England professional sports scene, and I encourage you to support them this Spring!
